Jun 29, 2005 · I read an article on LS1 piston slap. Root cause is the lack of a steel slipper in the pistons, plus short skirts. Steel slippers used to be used in factory engines to control expansion, longer skirts for noise control (minimize rocking). Piston slap sounds more ominous, almost like a rod knock, but distinct enough to identify. Even at it's mildest, I don't think I'd ever describe it as a tick, but it can be a light tapping sound. It's likely lifter noise from at least one lifter not pumping up right away. Piston slap, or cold start knock, is caused by the piston tolerance being too lose. When the engine cools the piston and rings shrink as does the cylinder sleeve. Thus the tolerances are too loose and when you start the engine the piston rattles around causing the CSK or PS if you prefer. Piston slap is well documented, but mine had a different issue from the factory; if the wrist pin tolerance is at the small end and the con rod tolerance is at the big end, you get what a powertrain engineer at Milford told me was "pin noise". Sounds like you have a collapsed lifter. Gets worse as the engine warms up (reverse of piston slap). now this may be a dumb question but if you tighten em down some would it cause some piston slap up in the high rpm range and im talkin like 4000 to 5000 rpms and what if ur timing is bumped up quite a bit cause mine is at 20* and i dont wanna do this and then have problems with it I have a 84 fj60 I have oil pressure and everything. As the motor idle it has no knock but when i give it gas the motor knocks I know that it is nothing serious bc it wheeled all day with the knock but I just can not figure out what it is other than the valve maybe out of adjustment. Is there... A 5/64-inch offset toward the major thrust face helped provided freedom from piston slap and allowed ample tolerances on the piston fit for economy of manufacturing. The skirt was reinforced and the "tails" made long to reduce deflection and cushion the load transfer during crossover from minor to major thrust sides. The piston slap comes from the piston skirt wearing out. This can be caused by dirt, obviously, but it's usually caused by high rpm operation. These motors have a reed valve crank vent, the higher they rev, the more vacuum they make, pulling the oil out more & more.
May 08, 2010 · Piston slap is normally associated with worn rings, pistons and/or bore, if the engine is not smoking I would look elsewhere for the source. I sold my Disco 1 with 275k on the oil, it did not smoke, rattle or knock and at the time I had the oil pressure relief valve changed at 240k oil pressure was still at factory specs. I get the cold start slap until my car comes up to about half full operating temp. Kinda scary when I heard it at first then it goes away after that. Venom might as have an ls1, those guys are still trying to get the dealer to warranty slap problems. Good Luck
Jun 12, 2014 · Perform a piston soak to free up piston rings. Replace forward oxygen sensors. Replace oil pressure sensor (currently leaking). Replace VLOM. Clean cylinder block. Replace all 8 AFM lifters. Re-install heads. Re-install exhaust manifolds. I hope to get the heads and exhaust manifolds to the machine shop Saturday morning. That's the plan anyway. I never had this issue but many others did. Many engines cannot take long term supercharger or Turbo use.

If the issue persists after reverting back to your original gas station or changing to a new one, it is likely that your motor has significant carbon build up. 01-02 5.3's had some serious cold start piston slap, that was resolved in 03 or 04. 5.3 in my '05 AV is dead quiet in the middle of the winter at start up with 110k on it after sitting outside overnight. Fairly sure GM tightened up the piston/bore in the later years. Just something you might want to check out.
